On Voting and Civic Duty

Letter from the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – October 6, 2020: In this letter to church members in the United States, the prophet and his counselors affirm the Church’s political neutrality and urge members to register to vote, become informed about the candidates, and be active in the political process by voting, indicating that it is a civic duty.

Civic Standards for the Faithful Saints by Ezra Taft Benson: In this April 1972 General Conference address, Elder Ezra Taft Benson outlines four civic standards by which faithful Latter-day Saints should govern their political lives: the inspired Constitution, the scriptures (particularly the Book of Mormon with its explicit warnings about secret combinations that destroy free nations), the counsel of living prophets, and the personal guidance of the Holy Spirit. He warns with urgency that the greatest threat facing America is a godless conspiracy working to erode constitutional liberty, and that Saints have a sacred duty to study correct principles, support honest and wise candidates, and seek the Spirit’s confirmation in all civic matters rather than blindly trusting any leader or arm of flesh.
